GENERAL INFORMATION

The Orbea Terra is an adventure bike that goes over land. Whether the ground beneath is paved, stoned, graveled, or dirt, the Terra can handle it. This is an all-day all-terrain road bike.

Obviously, tire clearance is part of the story here. 700c wheels can handle tires up to 40mm wide in this bike. And this leads to a longer, more comfortable fork, and seat stays that discard the brake bridge, which furthers vertical compliance. These features also mean that rotor disc brakes are installed on this bike as well. The flat mount standard is utilized for the calipers and there’s room for rotors up to 180mm in diameter. To keep the frame stiff and light, Orbea built around thru-axles, 100x12 in front and 142x12 in back.

And these features are an essential part of the geometry story. The bike has 430mm long chainstays, the shortest possible to fit 40mm tires. They can keep them short thanks to the PF30 bottom bracket shell, which works with just about every thru-axle crank on the market. Beyond the chainstay length, Orbea tweaks the geometry depending on the size of the frame, with the wheelbase lengthening as the frames get taller. Likewise, the stack and reach numbers also progress fairly evenly as the frames get bigger as well. The seat angle is a road-worthy 73.5-degrees, helping put you in a seat position you’re familiar with from a road bike. The head tube angle is a relatively slack 70.5-degrees, which results in a slightly more laid-back feel. Compared to a standard road bike, Orbea believes you should keep your seat position constant, but your bars should be higher and shorter, resulting in a slightly higher, more compact position, better for dealing with rougher, slower roads. Some, including Orbea’s Luna athletes, will race cyclocross on it, but that’s not the primary purpose here-and the bike is a bit lower in the bottom bracket and more stable than a typical ‘cross bike. But if you’re building a one-bike quiver, the Terra will handle it with aplomb.

The Terra minimizes the impact of rough roads while trying to maximize your efficiency. That’s why they utilize a bifurcated frame design, with the head tube, downtube, and chainstays built for lateral stiffness. The head tube is designed to work with a tapered 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” fork. The downtube is widened on its route to the bottom bracket, and the stays are set as wide as possible. The top tube is skinny and flattened at the back with a slight kink before the seat tube, and the seat tube is likewise skinny, designed for 27.2mm round seatposts, and skinny seatstays. This two-part thinking is also evident in the fork, with the lower legs allowing for vertical give, while the fork crown has been bulked up to minimize lateral flex.

The frame is built as a monocoque to minimize the amount of carbon needed. They also chose to deploy their OMP, Orbea Monocoque Performance, carbon, a proprietary mix, that is both light and strong.

The frame wouldn’t be complete without classic Orbea touches. The cable routing is internal, and can handle mechanical or electronic shifting, with the batteries either on the derailleurs ala eTap, or inside the seatpost ala Di2. There’s a dedicated front derailleur hanger, which can be removed if you’re running a 1x system. There’s an integrated frame protector above the bottom bracket, protecting your frame if you happen to drop a chain. There are threaded inserts on the fork, stays, and frame for installing fenders if you want to keep the road and water from flying up onto you.

Orbea offers the Terra in several different builds, each drawn for a rider in a different place, allowing the same platform several different personalities.

The Orbea Terra is grounded in reality so you can fly no matter where you are.
