Product Description

Orbea has further tricked out their Alma OMR so that it is lighter, stiffer, and more compliant. This is a World Cup-ready cross-country frame that provides plenty of stiffness to drive the bike, while gleefully absorbing bumps to the point that you’ll wonder why some people choose the extra weight and complexity of full suspension.

The way they account for suspension is something Orbea terms 4x4 technology. The 4 refers to a fourth point in the front triangle. You can see it from the side: it’s the bend right in the top tube right front of the seat tube. The top tube is already flattened in the vertical plane to maximize lateral stiffness and vertical compliance. The bend allows for extra flex in the seat tube and seat stays, easily loading and unloading as you ride along. This little bend provides 10% more vertical compliance than the previous Alma.

The frame itself is a monocoque design. They utilize their OMR, or Orbea Monocoque Racing, carbon, their lightest, stiffest mix of plies and resin. The tubes are formed on the inside by EPS foam and on the outside with a mold. This is a labor-intensive way to build a frame, but it results in smoother tubes on the inside and outside, which maximizes strength and durability.

The frame is built with two wheel sizes in mind. 27.5” for Small and Medium frames, 29” for Medium, Large, and Extra Large. They believe that smaller wheels makes sense for smaller riders, allowing Orbea to better tune the ride. The frame is designed to work best with 100mm travel forks or Orbea’s Spirit fork, which eschews travel for smartly-designed flex, low weight, and simplicity.

Helping maximize the Alma’s ride qualities are the standards employed. The 27.2mm seat post diameter means you get a compliant post. The BB92 bottom bracket allows for a wider stance on the chain stays, helping with lateral stiffness and increasing tire width. The choice of the Boost rear hub, 12x148mm thru axle adds strength to the wheel and means you can use a tire up to 2.4” wide. The post mount for the brake makes it easy to run 160-180mm rotors. The tapered head tube allows for a 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer fork, maximizing stem choice, light weight, and strength.

In terms of your build choice, the Alma gives you options. Hydraulic or mechanical braking, mechanical or electronic shifting. Dropper post or not. One, two, or three chainrings (34t max for single, 38t max for double). Cables run internally, and stops can be swapped for plugs and vice-versa. Direct mount front derailleur means you can run a derailleur or not. There’s even a built-in chain guide to eliminate dropped chains. For the rear derailleur, they have both a standard hanger and one for Shimano Direct Mount rear derailleurs.

When looking for an XC rig that takes advantage of the latest tech to give a compliant, efficient ride, look no further than the Orbea Alma OMR.
