Product Description

Soul is where a good hardtail resides. It’s simple, direct, fast, not encumbered by complications or adornments. Alma translates into soul, and it’s an apt description of the Orbea Alma H Series bikes. These are aluminum cross-country rides that build off the performance of the carbon-fiber Alma OMR, by giving you all the advantages Orbea knows how to pack into a bike, without burdening you with the price tag. The geometry is identical to the carbon-fiber Almas. The H also gives you the choice of 27.5” or 29er wheels, with three sizes for each.

The H in the name is for Hydroformed aluminum. Orbea was able to start with your basic high-tech butted aluminum tubes, and form them into precise shapes thanks to hydroforming. The shapes mimic the shapes you’ll find in the OMR Alma and that helps this bike ride like the Alma as well. Due to the unique ability to add and remove carbon plies, the weight is a bit greater than carbon and the flex not quite as dialed, but overall, it’s not only looks almost like its carbon sister, but rides almost identically as well. External cable routing, an English-threaded bottom bracket are two changes that came with the switch to aluminum. So, too, are hidden fender and rack mounts. You won’t know what to do with them until the need arises. Then you’ll be stoked Orbea was so forward-thinking.

The Alma H ride is subtle. It won’t rattle you like a traditional hardtail, even though it is clearly that. Compliance and rigidity have been designed in equal measures. Orbea calls the solution their 4x4 concept. It’s several little extra angled frame members, found between the rear of the top tube and the rear of the seat stays tube, which, thanks to their inclusion add vertical give without adding any unwanted horizontal flex.

The flattened top tube, almost triangular down tube, rounded seat tube and multi-shaped stays are all similar to the monocoque shapes you’ll find in carbon. At the top, they opted for a narrow 27.2mm seat post. The smaller diameter is more comfy as it flexes more than a 31.6mm post.

Regardless of the wheel size you choose, the geometry has been customized to best utilize the wheel size chosen. The top tubes are 7mm shorter on the 27.5, the head tubes are 5mm shorter, the chain stays are as short as possible in both cases, with the 27.5 having 13mm shorter stays.

The brake mounts work with 160-180mm rotors. The fork has 100mm of travel and a quick release at the tips.

The Orbea Alma H series gives you cross-country bliss on a budget.
