GENERAL INFORMATION

Mavic’s XA Pro Carbon Wheelset shows that the French wheel maker is still at the top of their game. This is a featherlight and strong wheelset for the vast middle ground between cross-country and big-hit riding. It comes, naturally, in both 27.5 (650b) and 29er iterations.

The rim is molded out of uni-directional carbon. The internal walls are  hookless and the internal width is 26mm, wider than a traditional cross-country rim for greater stability, but still narrow enough to feel like you can slash through tight turns. The rim is molded asymmetrically, so that the spoke tension between the right and left sides of the wheels are more even. While Mavic is known for smooth rim beds, it doesn’t work with carbon fiber. As a result, the wheel comes with Mavic tubeless tape and UST valves. The spokes are bladed, double-butted steel, with straight-pull heads going into Mavic’s cross-two front and rear hubs.

The wheelset is designed for lateral stiffness and a certain amount of vertical compliance. The need for lateral stiffness is obvious, as it aids both power transfer and tracking. Vertical give is present to make the ride a bit more forgiving, which can be nice when you’re running slightly higher pressure and still want to iron out small bumps without engaging the suspension.

These wheels are lightweights. The 650b front weighs 715g, the rear 835g. For the 29er, it’s 735g and 855g

The disc brake mounting is six-bolt, and comes with the appropriate bolts. The wheels come standard with a SRAM/Shimano cassette body. If you prefer a SRAM XD driver, you can purchase the body separately, and swap. The front hub is designed for 15mm thru-axles standard, and the rear 142x12mm thru-axles standard. Both can be converted to quick-release hubs with the installation of included adapters and included BX601 quick releases.

Mavic Care, a warranty program, can come in handy if crashing does in your Mavic wheel. Register for free on Mavic’s website, and you get 40% off the purchase of new product for up to three years. Make sure you keep receipts. For the remainder of this model year, Mavic will send you free tires for these wheels (remember, Mavic likes building wheel systems) if you register for Mavic Care. Just follow the instructions on the included hangtags.

When you’re up for anything, and want wheels that keep the climbing fun, look no further than the Mavic XA Pro Carbon wheelset.
