Product Description

If you like to mix and match your racing and training equipment, you may have trouble deciding on which side of the divide the Mavic Ellipse Track Rear Wheel falls. Designed by Mavic to be a training or racing wheel, but at a price that won’t break the bank, the Ellipse clincher track wheels are impressive in the high quality as well as the practicality they offer.

If you are just getting started on the track and want to have a wheelset that you can train and race on, or you are already pretty serious about your track racing and want to have some fine working wheels to train on, the Mavic Ellipse are the way to go. The rims have been improved with a light rim extrusion that makes them even more responsive. They are made from Mavic’s Maxtal aluminum, and offer a greater strength to weight ratio than the more common 6106 alloy. As a result, the rims are lighter and stronger than their alu competitors. Being aluminum experts, Mavic has also developed a method to keep the rim joint stronger and smoother. After the rim is bent into shape, the joint is arc welded and then that seam is milled for a flush, almost imperceptible finish. In a typically French acronym, they call this their Soudé Usiné Process (SUP), or Welded Machined Process. Whether you remember what they call it, you will notice just how balanced the wheel feels.

The aerodynamics of the Ellipse wheels have been enhanced by the 30 mm deep rim profile and the low spoke count of 20 in the rear keep this a light wheel at just 990 grams. The ultra-bladed steel spokes also contribute to how well the wheel slices through the air. The high spoke tension and the cross-two lacing keeps these wheels super stiff and ready to accelerate as soon as you drop the hammer. The hub body of the rear wheel is aluminum while the axle is steel. Taking no shortcuts with the Ellipse, Mavic uses their QRM+ bearing system. Super smooth rolling, the cartridge bearings are double sealed and sport a micro-adjustability system without having to remove the wheels from the bike. The rear wheel is a flip-flop fixed cog, or in some circles, fix-fix. That means you can have one gear on one side and another gear on the other. You might think that sounds odd until you realize just how convenient that makes these wheels, especially if you are inclined to require different gearing depending on what you are racing. Have the fifteen or sixteen on one side for training, the fifteen or fourteen on the other for racing.

Mavic wheels come with a two-year warranty against defects. Mavic also has their MP3 Program. Short for Mavic Purchase Protection Plan, this is an extended coverage option. It is not required, but it is a cheap and cheerful way to buy some peace of mind—think crash insurance. You’ll need to buy MP3 through Mavic’s website within ten days of purchasing your Ellipse Track Rear Wheel, so be certain to get onto the Mavic site soon after you place your wheel order to get the details.  More information will be packaged with your wheel.

Training or racing, the Ellipse will help keep you ahead of the pack. The Mavic Ellipse Track Rear Wheel will give you all the performance that a professional expects, but with the convenience that those of us without mechanics will appreciate.
