Product Description

New for 2015, the Krypton Xroad Ultegra Di2 takes some of key elements of the Krypton road platform and adds new features and technologies that give it added capabilities for rough roads, dirt and gravel. The result is a super versatile machine that’s light and stiff enough to have fun on the road, but also a great choice if you have some gravel grinding in your future.

The key differences that set the Xroad model apart are disc brakes, added frame clearance for larger tires up to 32mm diameter, and a special 5007 HM carbon composite frame material that’s tuned for rider comfort on variable terrain and riding surfaces. While the bike wasn’t necessarily created for cyclocross racing, it has a do-it-all personality and wouldn’t shy away from dry-ish ’cross terrain that’s suitable for 32mm or smaller tires.

Backing up that do-it-all claim, this model comes with a full Shimano Utegra Di2 parts kit including hydraulic disc brakes that gives it a confident feel no matter how bad the weather or road surface gets.

Like most Argon 18 performance road bikes, the Krypton Xroad has a unique solution to giving riders of different sizes and riding styles a more precise fit and position.
The 3D head tube system essentially lets you choose from three different head tube lengths for any given frame size (there are six sizes, ranging from XXS to XL).

The 3D setup lets you raise or lower the handlebar position without relying on traditional headset spacers. According to Argon 18 test results, raising the bar 15mm lets you retain 5 percent more rigidity compared to standard setups. And raising it 25mm saves 11 percent. That’s of particular use to a bike like this. You might prefer a lower, more streamlined position for daily road rides but then change it to something more upright if you’re going to tackle dirt, gravel and rougher terrain. The 3D System makes it easy to adjust without sacrificing stiffness or changing out stems.

Beyond the head tube adjustability, the Krypton Xroad further addresses fit and comfort with its Horizontal Dual System (HDS). Imagine a diagonal line running from the head tube down to the rear dropouts. Everything below the line represents the “Power Zone,” where rigidity matters most. In the case of the Xroad, that means an oversized head tube up front to ensure crisp, precise handling while cornering or sprinting, plus a massive bottom bracket area and asymmetrical chainstays to maximize every bit of energy you put into the pedals.

The “Comfort Zone” consists of smaller, thinner frame tubing up top to add compliance and give it a smoother ride. The Xroad’s narrow seatstays help absorb and dissipate road vibrations, and the carbon fiber seatpost adds even more road-smoothing comfort. (The post is reversible, allowing -15mm or -25mm setback.)

It all adds up to a frame that weighs in at 1190 grams (size medium). The carbon fiber, disc brake compatible fork weighs 505 grams, and the reversible 27.2mm carbon seatpost weighs 275 grams. It has a BB86 bottom bracket, and is integrated with internal cable routing for mechanical or electronic drivetrain components.
