Product Description

The Scott Plasma Premium and Team Issue bikes share a frameset, the Plasma 5. The easiest way to refer to it is as HMX, which is Scott’s acronym for High Modulus Extreme carbon-fiber, one of the cloths they employ in the lay-up of this frame. The name is supposed to convey that it is everything:  light, stiff, strong. It’s a great material to build a frame with, as riders of Scott’s top-of-the-line bikes can attest.

The Plasma is their everything to the limit time trial rig. It is the tool of choice for the WorldTour squads IAM Cycling and Orica-Greenedge, the latter of which is a consistent threat to win any pro team time trial. It is also the tri’ bike of choice for some scary fast people, like Sebastian Kienle, who climbed aboard one in 2014, and obliterated course records on it. The frame is UCI-compliant, though the handlebar-mounted hydration well, and top tube-mounted box need to come off to make that happen.

Those two things might seem like no big deal, but they’re they icing on the work of the Plasma. Both help on two fronts. Both for improving aerodynamics, and making essentials more convenient. Practical aerodynamics means not having to reach for a bottle, but having a straw in front of you, it means having food handy rather than having to reach for it. The bottles are even size-specific. The small bike has a 550ml bottle, the medium 625ml, the large 700ml and the extra-large 775ml.

More important is the ergonomic design of the handlebars. The handlebars, both the base bar and the extensions can be easily adjusted for height, width, and reach. And the bike comes with 75mm of spacers to raise up the armrests and extensions. There are both the standard parts and aftermarket options for both the handlebar and stem if you can’t get low or high enough. The bars were a joint project with Profile Design, and the ski-bend extensions are the standard 22.2mm diameter, so you can easily customize if the standard shapes and sizes don’t work for you.

The bars can be made to fit you, and so, too, can your seat position. The one-bolt seatpost offers 10cm for fore-aft adjustability and has the elegant and simple Ritchey one-bolt clamp for ease of setup.

The brakes are integrated into the frame. The front brake sits behind the bottle and in the fork and is completely hidden from the wind. It works great, but if you prefer your own brake, you can sacrifice aerodynamics for your choice. The frame comes without the rear brake; it is designed for direct mounting under the bottom bracket. Shimano and TRP are but two of the companies that make brakes for this mounting.

The frameset is designed to work with both electronic and mechanical drivetrains. The stays and fork can accommodate tires up to 25mm in diameter and rims up to 26.5mm wide.

All the aerodynamics are great, but unless it rides well, giving you the confidence to ride with your eyeballs bleeding, it’s no good. Scott has never had an issue with handling, and the Plasma Team Issue is no exception. It’s stable when riding all-out in a straight line, and it can handle corners and hills like a road bike.

The Plasma Team Issue frameset comes with the stops and plugs to set the bike up for whatever shifting system you prefer. It comes with the headset, stem, base bar, extensions, and spacers for setting up the bars. It comes with the handlebar bottle and storage box. It comes with the seat post. It comes with the front brake. The bottom bracket standard is BB86.

When you want the marginal gains to accrue into a major benefit, the Scott Plasma 5 is doing some major accounting.
