GENERAL INFORMATION

The Wilier Blade Ultegra Bike looks like a Twin Blade with a simpler front end. That's because the Blade shares a frame mold with the Twin Blade. This is a big benefit for the rider, as you get many of the aero benefits that came out with the Twin Blade, but at a better price tag and a rig that's much easier to service and travel with, and allows for greater adjustability of the handlebar position.

The frame shares geometry, features and aerodynamics with the Twin Blade. The wide-stance seat stays keep turbulence around the stays and rear wheel to a minimum. The orbital front derailleur hanger lets you find the perfect pitch for your front mech. The hidden TRP v-style brake is powerful and easy to adjust. The "easy adjust" rear dropouts give you 6mm of play to fine tune wheel aerodynamics and ease of removal. This is the kind of thing where you move the wheel closer to improve the aerodynamics of a narrow tire or move the wheel away if you decide you want to run a fatter tire.

The frame is built with 46-ton carbon-fiber cloth compared to the 60-ton on the Twin Blade. It's less rigid, so they use a bit more of it, both adding a little weight and reducing some stiffness.

On the stiffness front, Wilier has gone with a more traditional fork, which, if you don't like lots of road feedback when in the aero bars, is a plus. The legs have been elongated as far as possible for better aerodynamics, without compromising UCI-certification or ride quality. The traditional fork is also a plus for people who do their own wrenching or travel. Pulling the FSA stem is easier than the multiple bolts and special fittings of the Twin Blade.

The component selection sets you up with the go-to components of the self-sponsored. Shimano Ultegra and FSA. Ultegra eleven-speed is light and reliable and getting ever closer to Dura-Ace. FSA's Vision TriMax Pro crankset has aluminum arms and an aero shape. They're paired with FSA Tri-Max alloy base bars and aerobars, which are light and adjustable.

Putting a conventional FSA OS-190 stem on the bike that attaches to the 1 1/8" diameter steerer tube is wonderful for those who feel limited by the stem on the Twin Blade. By working with a conventional steerer tube, you can precisely adjust your position to reflect your torso length and flexibility.

For your seat position, the sliding rail seat post allows you four degrees of fore-aft adjustability, so you can favor a roadie's 74-degree angle or a tri' geek's 78-degree, or slide between the two extremes with ease.

Finishing up the components are Shimano's RS10 wheels dressed in Vittoria Zaffiro Pro rubber. These durable training wheels aero good enough to race on, an every day, all-condition set that can handle rough roads and distracted riding.

It's inevitable to think forward. The bike is great as is, but its natural for the mind to wander into the daydream of upgrades. For those days, know that the bottom bracket standard is Wilier's BB93 (aka BB94): this means Campagnolo thru-axle cranks fit without an adapter, others need an adapter. The internal cable routing is designed for mechanical shifting; so know you'll have to plug holes and figure out a spot for the battery rather than having adjustable ports and a dedicated battery mount.

The Wilier Blade Ultegra Bike takes the cutting-edge aerodynamics and ride of the pro-level Twin Blade and adapts it so everyone can get in on the action.
